St. Patrick’s Day is next week and one of the most popular ways to celebrate is by drinking a glass of delicious green beer! But you don’t have to go to your local bar to grab one. You can make your own! It’s super simple to do and you can use any variety of beer! Using only two ingredients, I’ll show you how to make green beer!
The funny thing about green beer, is that it’s actually an American idea! It started out as a mixture of beer and blue food coloring (the blue mixes with the natural yellow of the beer to make green). But now, we can just use green food coloring instead!
Around 1910, a local New York bar was serving the beer to patriotic Irishmen and anybody else who wanted to drink a green brew. By the 1950’s, green beer became synonymous with the St. Patrick’s Day holiday, which also became less Irish and more American as the years passed.
The brightness of the green coloring in your beer will all depend on how light of a beer variety you use. The lighter the beer, the brighter the green color in your glass!
Here’s what you’ll need to make your own:
- Green Food Coloring
- Glass
- Beer
Add 2-3 drops of green food coloring to the bottom of a clean glass.
Begin pouring the beer into the glass. Tilt the glass on it’s side and pour the beer against the side of the glass to prevent too much foam from forming on the top.
The green color can be vibrant in a pale beer or have a fun, foamy green head in a darker stout style of beer.
It’s a simple way to add a little bit of St. Patrick’s Day fun to your glass, even if you choose to stay home to celebrate with family or friends! And, you can show them how to make green beer too! š
