Chocolate Worm Whoopie Pies

31.10.18 | Ashley | No Comments

These chocolate worm whoopie pies are delicious and add a fun and creepy element to an otherwise normal dessert. Check out the recipe below!

Chocolate Worm Whoopie PiesChocolate Worm Whoopie PiesI have an obsession with whoopie pies. Macarons were in the spotlight for awhile there, but I’m definitely team whoopie pie. Anyone else with me? They are simple to make and filled with cream or frosting. (What’s not to love about that?) Plus, you can transform them into a fun Halloween themed dessert in a pinch too! These chocolate worm whoopie pies are delicious and add a fun and creepy element to an otherwise normal dessert…and you guys know I’m all about that!

They appeal to both kiddo’s and adults alike and, in my opinion, desserts are soooo much better when they are infested with worms! 😉

Chocolate Worm Whoopie PiesI took inspiration from the traditional kid’s dessert, a “dirt cup”, and put my own spin on it. Not everyone is a pudding fan, but these upgraded pies still have the dirt and worms required for a fresh from the garden dessert, and appeal more to the adults too!

Chocolate Worm Whoopie PiesFor this chocolate worm whoopie pies recipe you can use store bought gummy worms or you can make your own using this recipe. (Hint…they’re super easy to make and I think the homemade ones are more flavorful too!)

Chocolate Worm Whoopie PiesHere’s what you’ll need to make your own:

  • 2 Cups Flour
  • 1/2 Cup Cocoa Powder
  • 1 1/2 Tsp. Baking Soda
  • 1/2 Tsp. Salt
  • 1 Cup Sugar
  • 1 Stick Unsalted Butter, Softened
  • 1 Egg
  • 1 Tsp. Vanilla Extract
  • 1 Cup Buttermilk
  • 8 Ounces Semi Sweet Chocolate, Chopped or Chips
  • 1 Cup Heavy Cream
  • 1/8 Tsp. Salt
  • Chocolate Wafer Cookies, Crushed
  • Gummy Worms

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.

Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.

Mix together the flour, cocoa, baking soda, and 1/2 tsp. salt in a medium sized bowl. Set it aside.

Beat the sugar and butter in a mixer, on medium speed, until fluffy. Add the egg and vanilla and continue to beat until it’s mixed well.

Stir in half of the flour mixture, then add half of the buttermilk. Repeat with the remaining flour mixture and buttermilk. Stir until combined, but don’t overmix.

Scoop overfull tablespoons of batter, 2 inches apart, onto the parchment lined baking sheets.

Bake for about 10 minutes, or until the tops are puffed and the cakes spring back when touched.

Cool the cakes on the sheets for an additional 10 minutes and then transfer them to a wire cooling rack to cool completely.

Repeat the process until all of the batter is used.

Once the cakes are cool, it’s time to make the chocolate filling!

Bring the cream to a boil over medium-high heat and immediately pour over the chocolate.

Add 1/8 tsp. salt and let the milk mixture stand, untouched, for 10 minutes.

Stir using a whisk, until the chocolate is smooth and shiny.

Let the chocolate filling cool to room temperature, stirring often, for about 1 hour.

Once cooled, beat it with a mixer on medium-high speed until fluffy.

Transfer the filling to a pasty bag and pipe the chocolate filling onto the flat sides of half of the whoopie pies.

Chocolate Worm Whoopie PiesIf you want to add gummy worms to pop out of the tops of your cookies, create holes, wide enough for the worms to fit through, into the centers of the remaining whoopie pies. (I used the end of a skewer to create the holes easily).

Pop a worm through the top of the whoopie pie and then sandwich it together with the chocolate filled halves. If you are not adding worms to all of them, simply press the other half of the whoopie pies onto the tops of the chocolate filling to create a sandwich, without creating holes.

Pour your crushed chocolate wafer cookies onto a plate and gently roll the chocolate edges of the whoopie pies to coat them with chocolate “dirt”.

Chocolate Worm Whoopie PiesNo need to dig around in the garden for your treats this Halloween. Just make these whoopie pies instead!

These chocolate worm whoopie pies would also be perfect to serve at a garden themed party too!
